Pier 17 South Street Seaport

Project Description

In the aftermath of “superstorm” Sandy, the key design objectives of this project were durability, resilience and longevity. The unique geometry of Bendheim’s three-dimensional channel glass allowed it to reach continuous spans up to 20 feet, while bracing against the high Hudson River and East River winds. The non-porous 504 Rough Cast textured glass forms a durable protective shield around the upper stories of the building, as well as 2-story-tall light-boxes with integrated lighting. Back-lit at night, the light-diffusing glass turns the building into a beacon.

Project Testimonials

From the Architect:

“Ambitious projects need excellent partners. For Pier 17 at South Street Seaport, the channel glass facade relied on a structurally-bonded adapter for a flush appearance, eliminating the typical horizontal retaining shoe. Bendheim provided insight and engineering to help realize this unprecedented detail. They also provided quick turn-around on samples, reliable estimating throughout the design phase, and a non-standard deeper channel… Bendheim was the kind unflinching partner I’m always looking for on challenging projects.”
