Bendheim is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), joining the ranks of eco-conscious building & design professionals and manufacturers committed to sustainability.
Bendheim is committed to socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing. Our efforts include substantial investment in advanced, energy-efficient manufacturing machinery throughout our glass processing facilities, located in New Jersey, USA.
Bendheim employs a highly energy-efficient tempering furnace that does not require the use of sulfur dioxide, a chemical commonly used by other manufacturers. Specialized noise-reduction housing minimizes sound pollution and provides a more comfortable work environment.
Bendheim's multiple lamination lines produce thousands of feet of safety laminated glass per month. They do not employ any hazardous chemicals.
Our glass back-painting process utilizes specialty water-based paints, resulting in an environmentally-friendly, safe, and 100% VOC-free product.
Packing methods are carefully monitored to ensure maximum reuse of materials. We often recycle shipping crates and even repurpose shredded office paper as shipment padding.
We partner exclusively with North American and European glass manufacturers demonstrating commitment to the environment through recycling and clean production practices.
Glasfabrik Lamberts, one of our closest partners, produces a wide range of glass products exclusively for Bendheim in North America, including channel glass and a variety of textured / patterned architectural glass. Lamberts’ deep commitment to the environment is evident throughout its 1,000,000+ square foot manufacturing facility, run on 100% renewable electricity derived from wind, hydro, and solar energy resources.
Lamberts utilizes up to 40% of post-consumer glass, recycled from the municipal waste stream. Its advanced, ultra-clean-burning, oxygen-fueled cast glass furnace is the first one of its kind in Europe. The company’s specialized cooling ponds contain grass-eating carp, eliminating the need for chemical algaecides. A sophisticated filtration system reduces plant emissions substantially below strict European air quality regulations.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard seeks to “improve the quality of our buildings and their impact on the environment.”
Bendheim glass is a key element in a number of award-winning LEED certified buildings throughout the country, including Bronx Library – New York City’s first LEED certified public building – and Sarah Lawrence College Visual Arts Center, among many others.
Bendheim provides a wide range of glass types & systems to help architects and designers create sustainable environments and earn LEED credits, including:
- High-performance channel glass assemblies featuring thermal coatings, insulation, and thermally broken frame designs to maximize the energy performance of the building enclosure (download EPD)
- Textured & etched architectural glass varieties to maximize natural light and views, minimize glare, and reduce daytime lighting costs
- Bird-friendly glass to maintain buildings’ daylighting capacity while keeping migratory birds safe from collisions with glass.
