Bendheim’s Design Lab, in the New York Design Center, Re-Opens July 6th

Open Mon. – Thurs. from 10:30AM – 3:30PM

There is no better time to take advantage of meetings in our spacious and pristine Design Lab. Given very few of our clients have returned to their offices or have restrictions around visitors, Bendheim is providing a safe and efficient way to:

  • Access thousands of samples from Design Lab inventory.
  • Utilize our experienced design consultants to identify or create your specific glass aesthetic.
  • See glass in large format size and full scale mock-ups of our systems.

Precautions have been taken for a safe and productive experience:

  1. Building access by appointment only. Masks required to enter the building.
  2. Showroom access by appointment only. Masks required for visitors and employees in showroom.
  3. Entire space regularly wiped down with antibacterial cleaner.
  4. Both hand washing and disposable gloves available upon entry.
  5. Only 2 – 3 employees are working within the showroom to maintain adequate space.
  6. Showroom appointment times are carefully spaced, ensuring social distancing in our 5,000 sq. ft. space.

While COVID-19 has limited our ability to support you in your office, your clients still want timely results. Creating/securing samples in person is the most efficient method to get from concept to creation.

Bendheim Channel Glass Rainscreen Revamps Modernist Chicago Building

Our Lamberts® channel glass completely transforms and rebrands an existing commercial storefront in downtown Chicago to create a welcoming new Capital One Café. From its modern visual “rhythm” to a careful balance of privacy and transparency, the special three-dimensional glass delivers a contemporary guest experience, while respecting the architectural heritage of the building.

IA Interior Architects was tasked with creating Capital One’s Chicago Loop café into “an ideal place for anyone to touch down and work, seek personalized financial advice, or grab a cup of coffee,” according to the architects’ website. The architects chose to over-clad two stories of existing curtain wall with approximately 2,500 sq. ft. of our channel glass rainscreen to preserve as much of the original building as possible, while delivering a distinctive branding opportunity for the client.

The architects’ channel glass choice was inspired by several design considerations:

  • Desire to create a sensitive, modernist-style intervention to the existing building;
  • Use of our ultra-colorless low-iron channel glass for its “soft” translucent-white appearance – to evoke Capital One’s signature white-glazed brick facade aesthetic, featured throughout its other locations;
  • Provide the highest possible level of visibility and light transmittance, while seamlessly weaving in areas of visual privacy.

The architects’ chosen mix of Clarissimo™ glass channels as vision lites and Piccolo™ fluted texture channels as privacy lites in the continuous SF-60S rainscreen system provides the perfect balance between transparency and translucency. The channel glass facade disperses daylight and minimizes glare, eliminating the need for additional shading devices. It also beautifully diffuses the LED back-lighting at night.

Introducing Z-KISS™: Engineered Concealed-Attachment Glass Cladding System

New Interior Cladding System Designed and Produced in USA

Bendheim’s new patent-pending Z-KISS system features fewer components and stronger connections, creating a robust glass cladding with an elegant frameless aesthetic. The streamlined, “simpler” engineered solution is also easier and quicker to install.

The system consists of our proprietary “KISS” mechanical hanging hardware, factory-attached to any of our fully customizable opaque decorative glass varieties.

“Z-KISS was conceived as an enhanced, fully engineered alternative to traditional Z-clip fastening systems,” stated Said Elieh, Bendheim VP of Systems & Innovation. “It requires fewer horizontal hanging brackets and provides a reliable mechanical support for the dead load of the glass.”

Among the key Z-KISS innovations is its low profile – it stands only 5/16” from the wall. The system can be specified with an optional integrated kick plate, available in a wide range of custom colors to coordinate with the glass or other interior finishes. Z-KISS can handle large cladding panels in either direction, and is ideal for lobbies and expansive feature walls.

The range of Z-KISS aesthetic options is virtually unlimited, including hundreds of in-stock back-painted and mirrored glass varieties, as well as laminated, patterned, and digitally printed custom creations. The glass is provided in safety tempered or laminated form. Maximum panel size depends on the specified design, typically up to 60” x 120”. Glass thicknesses range from 1/4” to 1/2”.

The system’s “out-of-box” installation saves time and labor costs. The glass and galvanized steel hardware are delivered pre-fabricated and ready to hang. Completing the installation requires just hand tools and the proper wall-mounting screws to secure the aluminum brackets to the wall. The integrated Z-KISS system is warranted for 10 years.

Glass Cladding System Goes from Exterior to Interior, Clear to Translucent

We are pleased to announce our first project in the US to feature our Wall-F glass cladding system in multiple applications: as a traditional rainscreen over existing opaque walls, as a second-skin façade over a curtain wall, and as interior wall cladding. The flexibility of the system helped create a shared design language that unifies various functional areas at Omaha’s newly renovated Eppley airport by HDR Inc.

Part of a $89 million project to upgrade Eppley Airfield facilities and vehicular and pedestrian flow, several new buildings are clad in approx. 11,000 sq. ft. of our decorative laminated glass. The lites are captured in our non-traditional point-supported cladding system, which eliminates the need for drilled holes through the glass. The compression clip attachment method makes the system flexible and easy to work with, effortlessly encompassing the wide range of applications.

The ventilated glass system is used in multiple locations throughout the airport, including the car rental customer service building and at each entrance to the multi-level parking structure. It runs from the exterior to the interior of the car rental center, seamlessly transitioning from rainscreen cladding to an interior feature wall. In another key area, the system – featuring a mix of clear and translucent off-white laminated glass – attaches directly over the glass curtain wall of the elevator tower.

Throughout the airport, the decorative glass system functions as a wayfinding aide, as well as back-lit feature walls that illuminate surrounding areas at night.

According to Taylor Nielsen, architect with HDR, “other frosted glass backlit solutions were considered, but ultimately the cost effectiveness and ability to relatively easily remove the glass panels became a significant advantage of the Bendheim system.”

Luminous Glass Cladding Dresses Massive Concrete Walls, Enhances New Medical Center Facade

 

Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax, VA by Wilmot Sanz Architecture became the first project in the United States, and only the third in the world, to use Bendheim’s vertically-and-horizontally shingled glass rainscreen system. The luminous rainscreen creates a sculptural feature wall on the exterior of the building.

Inova occupies a 117-acre site that previously served as Exxon Mobil’s corporate HQ. Part of the effort to transform the 40-year-old campus into modern, patient-centered research and treatment center, the architects revamped the existing structures and added a new two-story proton therapy facility on the north-east end. The new addition houses highly sensitive imaging and diagnostic equipment, shielded behind 16-ft-thick reinforced concrete walls.

Bendheim’s 8,000 sq. ft. glass rainscreen plays the key role in transforming the cold concrete volume into a design highlight. True to Wilmot Sanz’s mission to deliver a patient-centered experience, the facade becomes a welcoming beacon. Constructed from translucent, ultra-white laminated textured glass, it scatters light, presenting a brilliant white aesthetic during the day. At night, the finely textured Solar™ glass diffuses cable LED back-lighting.

Bendheim engineered the glass with a structural SentryGlas® ionoplast interlayer in order to use relatively lightweight 3/8” (10 mm) glass for the large, 5 ft. by 6 ft., cladding panels. The interlayer reinforces the glass so it can span under the imposed wind loads. The vertically-and-horizontally shingled panels are held in patented compression fittings, independent of each other, for ease and speed of installation. The cladding’s continuous horizontal steel substructure sits atop a layer of rigid insulation, and doubles as an anchor for the cable LED lighting.

The glass rainscreen has more than an aesthetic and lighting role. It is necessary for the long-term performance and durability of the proton facility. The medical equipment it houses required a completely watertight building envelope. The specified Bendheim Wall-VH shingled glass system acts as a permanent moisture shield. It is fully tested in accordance with ASTM E330-02 for structural performance and AAMA 509-09 for its ability to stop more than 90 percent of wind-driven rain from reaching the air and vapor barrier of the building. The less than 10 percent of moisture that could get past the ventilated glass cladding dissipates quickly through drainage and evaporation.
