“We had a few reasons for using channel glass for the central volume of the St Matthews Eline Library. We knew that we wanted this centerpiece to glow like a lantern, marking the entry. In our local market this would typically mean use of storefront or curtain wall and etching the glass or installing a translucent film. Even though channel glass hasn’t been used much in our area, we researched it and determined that installation was relatively easy, and the thermal performance relative to storefront systems would be much better. An additional deciding factor was that the channel glass – freed from the dominant expression of the framing patterns of storefront or curtain wall – would give more an impression of a single unified volume.”
