Project Description
In 1916, the Statue of Liberty underwent renovation in an effort to illuminate the statue at night. An exterior lighting system was installed, and artist Gutzon Borglum was commissioned to redesign the torch. He removed much of the copper from the torch and replaced it with stained glass panels, so that it could be lit up at night. Years later, in a renovation of the torch, colored art glass by Bendheim was added and remains there to this day. The torch was removed in 1984 and put on display in the Statue’s lobby, until it was moved to the new Statue of Liberty Museum by FXCollaborative, opened in 2019.
