Project Description
The multi-story staircase in this state-of-the-art biomedical facility is clad in backlit, gently swirling “Streaky” Lamberts® mouth-blown art glass, fabricated by Derix Glasstudios and clasped in compression fittings. The light-diffusing artisanal glass is ideal for back-lit interior feature walls with character. Each two-foot-by-three-foot “raw” glass sheet is made by hand in Germany. Its creation begins with a gather of molten glass at the end of a blowpipe, which is continuously blown and spun to create an elongated bubble. The bubble is then worked into a cylinder shape, slowly cooled, cut lengthwise, reheated, opened, and flattened into a sheet. The resulting glass textures and colors are consistent, but no two pieces are completely alike, adding artisanal appeal to the wall. Bendheim laminates the glass to provide it in safety form for building applications, meeting the requirements for ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201.
