Titanium® SatinTech® Glass in “Metropolitan Home” Showtime House by Jamie Drake

Bendheim’s SatinTech® architectural glass is featured in Metropolitan Home’s Showtime House, a much anticipated transformation of a 19th-century New York City townhouse into a contemporary masterpiece. The project was inspired by several Showtime® original TV series, including “Californication,” “Dexter™,” “The L Word®,” “The Tudors” and “Weeds.” The Showtime House renovation is featured in the December 2008 issue of Metropolitan Home magazine.

The Bendheim installation is part of the designer’s vision of fictional writer Hank Moody’s dream study; a concept inspired by the “Californication” series, starring David Duchovny. Designed by Jamie Drake of Drake Design Associates, this modern home study has a unique luminescent quality that evokes tranquility and comfort. Drake’s design accentuates the fireplace with a wall of Bendheim’s gently reflective SatinTech® decorative glass, making it the room’s focal point and brightening the space. The SatinTech® glass feature wall offers beauty and radiance. Its permanent, maintenance-friendly surface resists fingerprinting and stains and is easily cleaned with commercial cleaners.
Bendheim’s SatinTech® family of architectural glasses gently diffuses light through a soft, silky, acid etched finish. SatinTech® glass is available in various patterns, colors and levels of translucency for dramatic visual effects. It can be ordered in standard annealed, safety-tempered and laminated forms.

New Bendheim Water-Jet Glass Cutting Machine Brings Increased Production Capabilities

Bendheim’s new extra-large capacity water jet cutting machine will speed up production on specialty-cut architectural glass orders, including template cuts, cut-outs, holes and notches, and will allow production of extremely complex shapes. Bendheim expects full operation to begin mid-October.

Bendheim’s water jet is equipped with a dynamic cutting head, allowing precision-cutting of complex shapes and curves at straight 90-degree angles, independent of the object’s thickness. In addition to glass, the water jet will cut metal, stone and composite materials.
The new manufacturing capability will enable Bendheim to offer more than 1,500 varieties of its art glasses to the architectural community, including Lamberts’ fine mouth-blown colored glasses, in precision-cut and laminated form. The company will also be able to offer their specialty decorative glasses in tile form.
The new equipment will be added to Bendheim’s advanced computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine and cutting tables at their processing facility in Passaic, N.J.

Bendheim Introduces the Spirit Collection™ | Translucent White Safety Laminated Glass

Bendheim is introducing the Spirit Collection™, a new line of safety laminated specialty glass, featuring an ethereal white translucent interlayer between combinations of patterned and clear architectural glasses.

The Spirit Collection’s refined contemporary style is well-suited for a variety of commercial, residential, and hospitality applications, including wall partitions, curtainwalls, windows, ceilings, balustrades, table tops, and lighting.
“There is a definite trend in the use of translucent white glass, a product providing excellent daylighting and exceptional aesthetics,” said Donald Jayson, Vice President of Bendheim. “Bendheim has taken this concept to a new level by creating a product available in a wide variety of textures, offering architects and designers an array of choices to suit their project needs.”
The glass can be custom created using an unlimited number of patterns, including low-iron options. The collection is currently offered in six textures (Ice Water, Winter Garden, Graphic, Venetian, Motion, and Pinstripe) and three opacity levels of polished white (Purity, Radiance, and Veil). The Spirit Collection™ is laminated for safety; some textures may also be tempered for special applications. The glass ranges from 1/4 to 3/4-inches in thickness and is available in large sheet sizes.

Two Bendheim Wall Systems’ Channel Glass Projects Win 2008 American Architecture Awards

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure in California, two projects featuring Lamberts channel glass provided by Bendheim Wall Systems Inc., have received 2008 American Architecture Awards for the best new building design in the United States.

The American Architecture Awards honor the most outstanding accomplishments for new architecture and urban planning projects designed and built in this country. This year’s jury conferred in Athens, Greece, and selected winners from hundreds of submissions from American architects and international firms practicing in the U.S.

“We are extremely pleased that the American Architecture Awards program has recognized these two projects featuring Bendheim Wall System’s channel glass,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “Both (projects) are strong examples of the dynamic design possibilities that can result when channel glass is used.”

Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art features five lenses of custom glass channels in a double glazed curtain wall application. Earlier this year, the project received the AIA National Honor Award and was selected as the # 1 Best (New and Upcoming) Architectural Marvel of 2007 by Time Magazine. The Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure, designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects, is the first LEED-certified parking structure in the United States. Bendheim’s tempered, back-painted Lamberts Prismasolar® texture channel glass set in a custom frame system earned the project a 2007 “Design in Glass” Award from the Glass Association of North America.

Established more than 10 years ago, the American Architecture Awards is a prestigious awards program for the public recognition of Excellence in Architecture in the United States both among national and international firms. The Awards identify cutting-edge design direction, urban philosophy, design approach, style, and intellectual substance in American architecture today. They are awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd.

Bendheim Employee Presented the Inaugural American Glass Guild Lifetime Achievement Award

Joseph Barnes of Bendheim received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Glass Guild (AGG), honoring his lifetime dedication to the stained glass industry. Joe’s career has spanned over 60 years, of which almost 40 are with Bendheim. He is the first recipient of the award now to be presented annually as the “Joe Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“Joe’s love of people and deeply rooted work ethic have made him a great asset to Bendheim and the stained glass industry,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “Joe is known to be the first man in to work and one of the last to leave; one of the few who can always be relied upon to do the job, no matter what the task. I cannot imagine how many thousands of people he has helped with color selection, substitutions, shipping questions or just “how-to” advice. From assisting visitors to our warehouse to answering a telephone call, Joe has always been there to help.”
Joe Barnes himself smiles as he reflects on his lifelong journey in the field. “I got in the glass business by accident, and I never thought I would stay in it for so long,” he admits.
After World War II, Joe found his first glass job at Leo Popper’s importers of specialty glass, almost by accident. He spent years learning the business under Popper’s guidance. In 1969, Popper closed its doors, and Barnes brought his skills to Bendheim.
Joe Barnes started out at Bendheim with a variety of jobs, including customer service, glass selection, cutting, and delivery. He is still actively involved in the company’s stained glass division, and has many loyal customers to date.
“I love working with glass,” Barnes explains. ”It has charm, beauty and so many design possibilities, there is so much you can do with it. The other great part of this job is working with people. I enjoy talking to them and helping them choose their glass.”
Joe has seen Bendheim grow from a small family-owned business to a national specialty glass company with five divisions, over 100 employees, facilities on both coasts, and a New York City showroom. As the company has evolved, Joe’s commitment to work has not diminished: With his children grown up, Bendheim is as much a part of his life as ever.
“I do not want to retire. I love the family-like friendliness and connection with people here. I do not think such atmosphere exists in companies any more. This job is my life.”

Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts® Channel Glass – Top 10 Green Building Product

The award-winning business magazine Sustainable Industries announced Bendheim Wall Systems’ LINIT Channel Glass by Lamberts as one of its 2008 Top 10 Green Building Products winners. Sustainable Industries’ Top 10 Green Building Products guide is an annual publication profiling industry-leading green building products selected by a panel of expert judges and the Sustainable Industries editorial team. This year’s Top 10 Green Building Products guide is the first-ever digital publication to contain 3-D images of green building products that can be manipulated by the viewer and plugged directly into actual design sketches.

Lamberts Channel Glass was selected based on its environmental performance, scalability/market impact, innovativeness, design aesthetic, value and compatibility with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Profiled in the guide with accompanying 3-D images, the winners were announced today in a Sustainable Industries Webinar featuring judges from the expert panel.
