Bendheim Provides Lamberts Mouth-Blown Glass for a New York City Restaurant.

The glass artist, Michael Davis, chose Lamberts mouth-blown art glass as his creative medium for the feature aquatic themed glass ceiling of The John Dory restaurant. The installation exemplifies how contemporary interior design and architecture can be enhanced through the use of mouth-blown art glasses.
The interior design of the John Dory pays tribute to its fish namesake and the owners’ love of seafood and art, featuring fish everywhere – from the fish tank, to the walls, to the glass walkway, to the illuminated art glass ceiling.
The ceiling spans from the entrance to the back of the restaurant. Sitting fifteen feet above the floor, the backlit glass artwork features various fish on a rich, ocean-blue background, each panel predictably sporting a John Dory.
“The owners were looking for a dramatic piece of art, combining vibrant color and simplicity of design,” said Davis. “Lamberts’ variety of colors and textures was the perfect choice for this project. The quality of the glass allowed me to achieve the dramatic effects we sought.”
Davis hand-selected each sheet of Lamberts glass, carefully cutting the pieces through their tonal changes to create the seamless design.  He followed with selectively sandblasting the glass to remove layers of color, silk screening the pieces with glass enamels, and kiln-firing them to permanently bond the enamel designs to the glass.
Imported from Germany by Bendheim, each sheet of Lamberts glass is hand-crafted utilizing the centuries-old mouth-blown method. Colors are produced following ancient formulas, carefully mixing measured amounts of metal oxides into the batches of pure sand to be later melted into glass. A rich palette of more than 500 colors is available from Bendheim’s extensive stock, with more than 5,000 colors accessible through the Lamberts factory in Germany.
