Bendheim Channel Glass in Montclair State University Student Recreation Center

Illuminated With Energy-Efficient LED Lights, Channel Glass Wall Creates User-Programmable Light Show.

Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts channel glass is a prominent design element in the new Montclair State University Student Recreation Center. Energy-efficient, programmable LED lights illuminate the curved interior channel glass wall and breathe energy into the state-of-the-art facility. It is a powerful visual draw welcoming visitors from among the 16,000 students attending the university.

 

The 78,000 square foot Center is dedicated to students’ health and fitness activities and provides a variety of programs and facilities including a natatorium and gymnasium. The entrance lobby has clear views of the exercise and nutrition areas. Central to this area are the 20-foot tall parallel, single-glazed channel glass walls which provide a sweeping backdrop to the curved center staircase. The computer-controlled LED system can display an infinite array of light shows, giving the entire space a sense of excitement and movement. The curtain of glass literally glows from within.
Working with RDG Planning & Design of Des Moines, IA, Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. provided its tempered, 504 Rough Cast textured channel glass, certified by the Safety Glazing Certification Council, as well as the proprietary frame system.
“Lamberts channel glass is best known for its large-scale exterior projects featuring expansive walls of glass,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “Montclair State University Student Recreation Center is a powerful example of how channel glass can be an essential design element when successfully incorporated into a building’s interior space.”
Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts channel glass is translucent, U-shaped glass used to create sweeping walls of glass, including curves and corners, without the need for intermediate framing members. Reaching heights up to 23 feet, it is an ideal daylighting material and contains as much as 60 percent recycled glass, including up to 40 percent post-consumer. Many award-winning projects feature striking Bendheim supplied Lamberts channel glass walls and elements; among them, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art by Steven Holl and The Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure by Moore Ruble Yudell.

Bendheim Restoration Glass® (“New Antique” Window Glass) Featured in AIA Honor Award-Winning Project

The Beauvoir restoration project featuring authentic mouth-blown Restoration Glass®  (“new antique” window glass) receives a 2010 AIA National Honor Award.

Albert & Associates Architects specified Light Restoration Glass®, supplied exclusively by Bendheim, as the glass of choice for Beauvoir, the Presidential Library in Biloxi, Mississippi. The high-profile restoration project was recently recognized with a 2010 AIA National Honor Award.

 

Bendheim provided 209 panes of mouth-blown Restoration Glass® to restore Beauvoir’s antique glass windows and the front and back glass doors. The glass is identical to authentic mouth-blown antique window glass made before the advent of modern window glassmaking. The slight distortions, occasional bubbles, pits and imperfections characteristic to this specialty glass make it ideal for historically correct restorations of commercial buildings, residential work, and furniture. Restoration Glass® can be found in such high-profile projects as The White House in Washington, D.C., Monticello – Thomas Jefferson’s Home in Charlottesville, VA, and George Washington’s Home in Mount Vernon, VA.

 

Light Restoration Glass® is less distorting and similar to the glass from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Bendheim also offers Full Restoration Glass® that is more distorting and accurately represents much of the glass made in the 17th and 18th centuries. Both varieties are manufactured exclusively by Germany’s Glashütte Lamberts for Bendheim in North America, and can be laminated for additional safety.

 

Beauvoir, the presidential library and last home of Jefferson Davis, was built in 1852. Five of its seven buildings were destroyed and the remaining two were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Beauvoir lost its front and side porches and two sections of the roof.  According to the published AIA jury comments: “A wonderful, archetypal house with significant history has been brought back from the dead… This project transcends the typical restoration project – restoring Beauvoir was truly a labor of love and it shows in every detail of the home.” And, “As a victim of Hurricane Katrina, this project is significant culturally, historically and architecturally.”  (Source: https://www.aia.org/practicing/awards/AIAB082053)

Bendheim Architectural Glass at Award-Winning Solar Decathlon Project

Team California’s Solar-Powered House Awarded Third Place in Prestigious Competition Hosted by U.S. Department of Energy

This year, Bendheim was part of the exciting international competition that challenged 20 teams of college students to build the most technologically savvy solar-powered house at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C.

 

Bendheim supported the efforts of Team California, a team of 100 undergraduates from Santa Clara University and California College of Arts, through the donation of Color Coated glass for the team’s Refract House. The team was awarded third place in the competition which took place on October 8-16, 2009.

 

Team California completed Refract House after two years of hard work, then dismantled and transported it across the country to reassemble the structure upon arrival at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Team members moved into their house for the duration of the competition, proving it could produce enough electricity and hot water from solar panels to run a modern home with all essential conveniences.
Team California’s goal to create a house as beautiful as it was energy-efficient brought them to Bendheim’s “White” and “Blue Stream” Color Coated low-iron glasses for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes. These 100 percent VOC-free, hygienic, maintenance-friendly products also provided the desired contemporary aesthetic.
The large Bendheim glass panels were manufactured using environmentally friendly water-based, fade-resistant color coatings.  Bendheim’s precision cutting, polishing, tempering, and back-painting processes met the fast-track requirements of the project.

 

This year’s Solar Decathlon competition was the fourth since the event premiered in 2002 with subsequent competitions in 2005 and 2007. On average, each Solar Decathlon has drawn more than 100,000 visitors to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Bendheim’s Optichroic® Glass Distinguishes Donor Recognition Signage

A specialty glass by Bendheim, North America’s leading importer and manufacturer of decorative architectural glass, was used to highlight the informational and donor recognition signage in the newly constructed University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
 
Optichroic® glass, invented and perfected by Bendheim, was selected because of its distinct ability to capture and radiate the full color spectrum of light. The luminescent qualities of Optichroic®, combined with the carefully conceived and executed design, create a dynamic radiant element setting the donor wall apart. Created through specialized interlayer technologies, the glass is available in a wide range of texture and color combinations, including clear and etched patterns, and is suitable for large-scale architectural applications. It is an environmentally sound, low maintenance, safety glass.
“The striking appearance of the Optichroic® glass panels in this truly distinctive signage installation naturally focuses the attention on the names of the people whose generosity made this ambitious project possible,” said Steven Jayson, Vice President of Bendheim.
Poulin + Morris Inc., signage design consultants, in coordination with the renowned architects of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC, intended the sign tablets to reflect the infusion of natural light passing through the building’s sky-lit spaces. Having worked with Bendheim on various other projects in the past, the designers selected the company’s Optichroic® glass to create more than 100 individual glass panels on a sixty-foot donor recognition wall as well as more than 200 classroom and teachers’ office identification signs. Design Communications Ltd., a leading fabricator of custom architectural specialties, used the Optichroic® glass panels as the primary material for­­ the signage.

Bendheim Custom Color Coated (Back-Painted) Glass in Hyatt Regency Renovation

When the Jersey City Hyatt Regency embarked on a guest room remodel at the height of the financial crisis, the project team was challenged to enhance the décor in a sustainable and fiscally responsible manner.  Their innovative solution revitalizes 1,200 existing wood bedside, accent, and coffee tables with Bendheim’s fire-polished glass surfaces in a deep chocolate brown color. Installation was completed by Eastchester Glass of Scarsdale, NY.

Bendheim’s precision cutting, polishing, tempering, and back-painting processes met the quality, cost and fast-track requirements of the project.  Tempered for additional safety and durability, the custom Color Coated glass coordinates with the existing furniture and reinvigorates the classic décor of the rooms. The ultra-hygienic glass surfaces offer hotel patrons additional comfort.
“We were looking to bring a new, exciting design element into the rooms while maintaining the integrity of the existing color palette and the relaxing atmosphere our customers have come to expect,” said Kierie L. Heim, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hyatt Regency. “Bendheim achieved the desired look and supplied the glass within record time to accommodate our challenging installation schedule.”

Bendheim Geometric Textured Glass at Ermenegildo Zegna NYC Flagship Boutique

Bendheim provides laminated geometric pattern glass for the recently completed renovation of the award-winning Ermenegildo Zegna Flagship at 663 Fifth Avenue, New York City.

Ermenegildo Zegna’s new global store concept, designed by architect Peter Marino, combines the best of traditional and contemporary design. Inspired by Ermenegildo Zegna’s woven-goods history and its wool mills in the Italian Alps, the architect’s design for the 9,200-sq.-ft. store bears resemblance to a loom in action.
The soft geometry of Bendheim’s safety-laminated glass, featured in the central stair, gives a sense of movement to the nature-themed mural behind it. The vertical pattern of the glass draws customers upward to further explore the store’s upper floors. Bendheim’s careful attention to the pronounced linear glass patterns, through the precise engineering and manufacture of individual glass sections, creates a seamless transition between the adjacent units.
“The patterned glass combined with the nature mural and lenticular film behind it creates an additional woven element to the store,” Mr. Marino said.
