Two high-profile architectural installations featuring Bendheim Wall Systems Lamberts channel glass receive prestigious AIA National Honor awards.
Bendheim Wall Systems worked closely with architectural design teams to provide Lamberts channel glass, the key exterior design element, for two AIA 2008 National Honor Award winning projects – the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building in Kansas City, Missouri and the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The AIA National Honor Award is the profession’s highest recognition of works exemplifying excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design.

“These projects show the dynamic possibilities of designing with LINIT channel glass. The five lenses of Steven Holl’s Bloch Building are formed with custom glass channels in a double glazed curtain wall application, while Schwartz/Silver’s Shaw Center of the Arts, called the “lantern on the levee,” features a single glazed rain screen with its channel glass flanges turned outward” said Robert Jayson, President of S.A. Bendheim, Co., Inc. “Illuminating the channel glass-clad structures was critical to their design, and the installations – by Carter Glass for the Bloch Building and BHN for the Shaw Center – were exemplary.”

Introducing Optichroic™ Architectural Dichroic Glass

Bendheim’s Optichroic™ dichroic glass is the first glass of its type suitable for architectural applications. Developed in the late fifties by NASA to protect against the potentially harmful effects of direct sunlight and cosmic radiation, dichroic glass, with its striking visual qualities, has been used in a variety of scientific and industrial applications. Its name is a derivation of the Greek word dikhroos, or two colors, which describes how light reflecting off the glass surface changes in color as the angle of vision changes.

Optichroic™ glass is created through specialized interlayer technologies.  As the viewer’s angle to the glass changes, so does its color, giving Optichroic™ its refined iridescent characteristics.

“Historically, dichroic glass has not been available in large sheet sizes, limiting the architectural community  to small-scale applications.,” said Steven Jayson, Bendheim’s Executive Vice President and one of three of the founder’s grandsons now managing the company. “Architects can now choose an authentic safety laminated dichroic glass from a wide variety of patterns. Our Optichroic™ glass offers an attractive aesthetic with the added durability of a scratch-resistant, easy to maintain glass. It has been rigorously tested by independent labs to ensure the Optichroic™ dichroic effect is long-lasting and stable.”

Optichroic™ glass is available in a virtually unlimited number of variations, including clear, fully and lightly etched, etched patterns, as well as organic and geometric textures. It can be produced in sheets as large as 52 by 120 inches.

Bendheim Precision-Cut & Edged Mirrored Glass Tiles Shine at Luxurious Christian Lacroix Clothing Boutique

French Haute Couture designer Christian Lacroix selects specialty glass tiles by Bendheim for the design of his Las Vegas store.

Inspired by Christian Lacroix’s eclectic style, his store at Caesars in Las Vegas creates a chic modern aesthetic through the combination of contemporary elements and Lacroix’s characteristic rich French Baroque style. The design objective, to create a subway-scale, beveled glass tile wall, is successfully accomplished with Bendheim custom cut, silvered and mitered glass pieces. The end result…. a lustrous, fluid glass wall.

Bendheim Black Glass Cladding Panels Define Elegant NYC Hotel Lobby

The Night Hotel lobby, designed by Mark Zeff of Zeff Design, features custom beveled black glass panels by Bendheim.

Vikram Chatwal’s boutique Night Hotel, located in the vibrant Times Square, New York City, is a stylish creation, combining gothic and ultra-modern themes. A vision of a better Gotham City is at the heart of this award-winning design by Mark Zeff, and the hotel theme and interiors are inspired by the rhythm of the City. Executing the designer’s dark and dramatic concept called for luxury custom glass from Bendheim. The precision-cut, mirrored and mitered glass panels provide one of the most striking design elements of the Night’s lobby.
The Night Hotel is located in the heart of New York City’s Theater District on West 45th Street. The project received a Best of Year Interior Design Merit Award and was featured on the cover of Interior Design Magazine.

Bendheim Architectural Glass Makes a Splash at Kelsey Seybold Clinic

Layers of glass, color, texture, and depth… Aquatic, organic, soothing…

Words that well describe the main lobby accent wall and reception stations at Kelsey Seybold Clinic, located in Houston, Texas. The structure houses multiple medical practices and incorporates seven separate reception desks, each containing five stations used for patient admissions.

Bendheim’s architectural River Ice patterned glass offers an excellent water-like quality – one of the reasons it was selected for this project.
As Laurie Waggener, RRT, IIDA, interior designer with HKS, Inc. explained, “the design challenge was to create a main lobby backdrop and admission stations that created a safe and pleasing space, and at the same time, allowed visual privacy from one admission area to the next. We also needed to respond to sections of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and meet budget.”
To meet the project specifications including safety, privacy, aesthetics, and budget, multiple plies of Bendheim’s glass were laminated with an interlayer of a custom turquoise film, and as Waggener commented, “with Bendheim’s help, the intended installation and aesthetics were achieved and the results met our expectations. Bendheim was recommended by another senior designer at HKS. The accurate technical advice… shortened my learning curve and made the experience with Bendheim smooth and easy.”
The delivery and installation went well for general contractor Isidro Velez of Schoppman Freese. As Velez explained, ” the admissions station partitions were definitely a challenge due to the unusual glass shape. The main challenge was in the layout and making sure that the angle of the glass fins fit both the soffets and mill work correctly… everything went according to schedule.”

Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts® Channel Glass – Ideal Choice for Sarah Lawrence Visual Arts Center

The new, stunning Heimbold Visual Arts Center at Sarah Lawrence College showcases Bendheim’s LINIT Channel Glass system. So remarkable are the results that the new building’s glass façade now graces the front cover of Sarah Lawrence’s Autumn admissions brochure.

The Heimbold Visual Arts Center, designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, is prominently situated on the Bronxville, NY campus of this prestigious liberal arts college. Recently honored by the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) by receiving a Top Ten Green Project Award, the Heimbold Center provides a grand view from the President’s House.

 

In selecting the building’s primary materials – fieldstone, cedar, channel glass, and zinc – the design team found inspiration in the campus’s rich landscape and historic architecture. Quarrying the stone nearby continued the College’s history of utilizing local fieldstone in the construction of its buildings. Materials were selected to reduce contaminants that impact indoor air quality and to lessen the environmental impacts of material manufacture and procurement.

 

As Susan Rodriquez, project architect explained, “the building utilizes a perfect balance of natural materials and offers a veiled, layered feel – there’s a sense of mystery as you look from the outside to the interior of the structure. The textural quality of Bendheim’s LINIT Channel Glass pebble pattern provides a pleasing quality that contributed tremendously to the overall design. The channel glass is very durable, and doesn’t need to be cleaned often, so tape on interior studio walls is OK.”

 

“Challenges included inserting the building on campus not only adjacent to the president’s home, but also near a bedroom that looks out to the Arts Center. In addition, the painting studios needed to face north and provide maximum light into the interior of the structure. The technical challenges were well satisfied on a previous project (Lycée Francais, New York, NY) so we were very comfortable using Bendheim’s LINIT Channel Glass for this project.”

 

This high profile project, installed by W&W Glass, LLC, is the first application of Bendheim Wall Systems’ LINIT channel glass in a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified structure.

 

As Scott Haber, Vice President of W&W Glass noted, “the installation went smoothly and was relatively easy for us because we had completed several installations using Bendheim’s LINIT Channel Glass prior to the Sarah Lawrence project. We really understand Bendheim’s wall system installation requirements. Bendheim also made sure that the materials were delivered prior to the start of the installation. The challenge was to insert transparent operable units inside the curtain wall for ventilation.”

 

Recent projects awarded to Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. include the Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and the Steven Holl / Rogers Marvel-designed Pratt Institute Higgins Hall in New York.

The Bendheim LINIT channel glass system eliminates the need for most vertical and intermediate horizontal framing members. The translucent, structural glazing system meets or exceeds most project design criteria, providing light, function, and aesthetics.
