Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts® Channel Glass – Top 10 Green Building Product

The award-winning business magazine Sustainable Industries announced Bendheim Wall Systems’ LINIT Channel Glass by Lamberts as one of its 2008 Top 10 Green Building Products winners. Sustainable Industries’ Top 10 Green Building Products guide is an annual publication profiling industry-leading green building products selected by a panel of expert judges and the Sustainable Industries editorial team. This year’s Top 10 Green Building Products guide is the first-ever digital publication to contain 3-D images of green building products that can be manipulated by the viewer and plugged directly into actual design sketches.

Lamberts Channel Glass was selected based on its environmental performance, scalability/market impact, innovativeness, design aesthetic, value and compatibility with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Profiled in the guide with accompanying 3-D images, the winners were announced today in a Sustainable Industries Webinar featuring judges from the expert panel.

AIA CES Names Bendheim Approved Continuing Education Provider

Bendheim was recently named a Continuing Education Systems (CES) registered provider by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).  The company’s first programs for AIA and state credit focus on Decorative Architectural Glasses and Channel Glass Wall Systems. Participation in each one-hour program is free-of-charge and earns industry professionals one Health, Safety and Welfare learning unit (1 HSW LU).

Bendheim’s programs are available to architects, designers, and other building professionals as in-office presentations where the company has local representation. Programs will be held regularly at Bendheim’s New York City Showroom, located at 122 Hudson Street in TriBeCa. Bendheim Project Receives Award from the Glass Association of North America (GANA)

The Glass Association of North America recognizes this parking project for outstanding architectural use of glass, both functional and aesthetic.

Lamberts channel glass provided by Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. for the Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure in California recently earned it the 2007 “Design in Glass” Award from the Glass Association of North America (GANA). The award recognizes excellence in the use of glass in architectural design.

The Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure is the first LEED-certified garage in the United States. Designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects, the building features tempered, back-painted Lamberts Prismasolar® texture channel glass set in a custom frame system. The colored channel glass pieces are angled to act as a rain screen and provide proper ventilation while adding intricacy and light to the six-story pre-cast concrete parking structure.
Colors include blues and greens reflecting the ocean toward the west, and orange and red reflecting the sunrise toward the east; neon lights installed behind every tenth channel create a glowing façade at night. Cantilevered glass canopies near the lower level project colors onto the ground surface and photovoltaic roof panels provide energy.
“We are honored to have GANA recognize Bendheim Wall Systems’ channel glass for its contribution to good architectural design,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim.  “This award is a compliment to a project showcasing energy efficiency, sustainability and the first-time usage of colored channel glass in the U.S.”

Two high-profile architectural installations featuring Bendheim Wall Systems Lamberts channel glass receive prestigious AIA National Honor awards.
Bendheim Wall Systems worked closely with architectural design teams to provide Lamberts channel glass, the key exterior design element, for two AIA 2008 National Honor Award winning projects – the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building in Kansas City, Missouri and the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The AIA National Honor Award is the profession’s highest recognition of works exemplifying excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design.

“These projects show the dynamic possibilities of designing with LINIT channel glass. The five lenses of Steven Holl’s Bloch Building are formed with custom glass channels in a double glazed curtain wall application, while Schwartz/Silver’s Shaw Center of the Arts, called the “lantern on the levee,” features a single glazed rain screen with its channel glass flanges turned outward” said Robert Jayson, President of S.A. Bendheim, Co., Inc. “Illuminating the channel glass-clad structures was critical to their design, and the installations – by Carter Glass for the Bloch Building and BHN for the Shaw Center – were exemplary.”

Introducing Optichroic™ Architectural Dichroic Glass

Bendheim’s Optichroic™ dichroic glass is the first glass of its type suitable for architectural applications. Developed in the late fifties by NASA to protect against the potentially harmful effects of direct sunlight and cosmic radiation, dichroic glass, with its striking visual qualities, has been used in a variety of scientific and industrial applications. Its name is a derivation of the Greek word dikhroos, or two colors, which describes how light reflecting off the glass surface changes in color as the angle of vision changes.

Optichroic™ glass is created through specialized interlayer technologies.  As the viewer’s angle to the glass changes, so does its color, giving Optichroic™ its refined iridescent characteristics.

“Historically, dichroic glass has not been available in large sheet sizes, limiting the architectural community  to small-scale applications.,” said Steven Jayson, Bendheim’s Executive Vice President and one of three of the founder’s grandsons now managing the company. “Architects can now choose an authentic safety laminated dichroic glass from a wide variety of patterns. Our Optichroic™ glass offers an attractive aesthetic with the added durability of a scratch-resistant, easy to maintain glass. It has been rigorously tested by independent labs to ensure the Optichroic™ dichroic effect is long-lasting and stable.”

Optichroic™ glass is available in a virtually unlimited number of variations, including clear, fully and lightly etched, etched patterns, as well as organic and geometric textures. It can be produced in sheets as large as 52 by 120 inches.

French Haute Couture designer Christian Lacroix selects specialty glass tiles by Bendheim for the design of his Las Vegas store.

Inspired by Christian Lacroix’s eclectic style, his store at Caesars in Las Vegas creates a chic modern aesthetic through the combination of contemporary elements and Lacroix’s characteristic rich French Baroque style. The design objective, to create a subway-scale, beveled glass tile wall, is successfully accomplished with Bendheim custom cut, silvered and mitered glass pieces. The end result…. a lustrous, fluid glass wall.
