“The Construction Specifier” Front Cover Features Bendheim Wall Systems’ Channel Glass

The Construction Specifier Magazine’s May 2010 issue contains a feature story on how to specify channel glass, written by Jim Donoghue, Technical Services Manager of Bendheim Wall Systems Inc.

The detailed ten-page article discusses design and specification standards required for the proper application of channel glass. Featured on the front cover of the magazine is Bendheim’s award-winning Pratt Institute – Higgins Hall, designed by Steven Holl and Rogers Marvel Architects. Included in the article are numerous additional channel glass projects of architectural and cultural importance, as well as informative product photos.

Segerstrom Science Center, Azusa Pacific University: Faith, Science, and Lamberts® Channel Glass

Lamberts channel glass provided by Bendheim Wall Systems completes the dramatic façade of the new Segerstrom Science Center at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California, located by historic Route 66 north of Los Angeles.

For the $42 million building at California’s first Bible college, A.C. Martin Partners, Inc. took advantage of the unique structural properties of Lamberts channel glass. The single- and double-glazed walls of obscuring channel glass combine privacy with excellent light-scattering properties and fill the Science Center’s new laboratories and study areas with gentle daylight. In an unusual enhancement, the entrance walls of the building display Biblical quotations sandblasted onto the glass surface.
Lamberts channel glass features up to 40% post-consumer material contributing to the overall sustainability of the project and its target of LEED Gold certification. From the safety standpoint, Lamberts channel glass is the only tempered, heat soak tested channel glass to be SGCC (Safety Glazing Certification Council) certified. Installation of the channel glass was handled by Corona Aluminum.
Bendheim Wall Systems is the exclusive North American importer of Lamberts channel glass, translucent, U-shaped glass planks assembled to create sweeping walls of glass without the need for intermediate framing members. An ideal daylighting material, Lamberts channel glass is produced in lengths up to 23 feet. Bendheim Wall Systems’ Channel Glass Project Wins 2010 AIA Institute Honor Award

Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts channel glass is a key design element in the Serta International Center, Bendheim’s third project in three years to earn a national AIA Institute Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture. The AIA Institute Honor Award is the profession’s highest recognition of works exemplifying excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design.

Located in Hoffman Estates, IL, Serta International Mattress Company’s world corporate headquarters combines a 65,000 square-foot office wing and a 25,000 square-foot industrial research and development facility. The building is designed to provide equal access to natural light, ventilation, and views of the wetlands for all Serta employees.
Working closely with Epstein | Metter Studio, Bendheim Wall Systems provided its SGCC certified, 504 Rough Cast tempered, sandblasted channel glass and their proprietary frame system. The glass allows Serta’s research and development department to operate largely without artificial lighting while concealing machinery and materials from public view. The glass channels are one of the few vertically oriented design elements on this horizontal two-story building.
“Serta International Center joins such AIA Institute Honor Award winners as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Bloch Building and the Shaw Center for the Arts, all featuring Lamberts channel glass,” said Michael Tryon, General Manager of Bendheim Wall System, Inc. “This recognition holds special significance for Bendheim as it acknowledges the contribution of our channel glass wall systems to outstanding architectural design.”
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, won the AIA Institute Honor Awards in 2008. The five lenses of the Bloch Building are formed with Lamberts custom glass channels in a double-glazed curtain wall application, while the Shaw Center for the Arts features a single-glazed rain screen with its channel glass flanges turned outward.
Bendheim Wall Systems’ translucent, U-shaped Lamberts channel glass creates sweeping walls of glass, including curves and corners, without the need for intermediate framing members. Reaching heights of 23 feet, it is an ideal daylighting material and contains as much as 60 percent recycled glass, including up to 40 percent post-consumer.

Illuminated With Energy-Efficient LED Lights, Channel Glass Wall Creates User-Programmable Light Show.

Bendheim Wall Systems’ Lamberts channel glass is a prominent design element in the new Montclair State University Student Recreation Center. Energy-efficient, programmable LED lights illuminate the curved interior channel glass wall and breathe energy into the state-of-the-art facility. It is a powerful visual draw welcoming visitors from among the 16,000 students attending the university.

 

The 78,000 square foot Center is dedicated to students’ health and fitness activities and provides a variety of programs and facilities including a natatorium and gymnasium. The entrance lobby has clear views of the exercise and nutrition areas. Central to this area are the 20-foot tall parallel, single-glazed channel glass walls which provide a sweeping backdrop to the curved center staircase. The computer-controlled LED system can display an infinite array of light shows, giving the entire space a sense of excitement and movement. The curtain of glass literally glows from within.
Working with RDG Planning & Design of Des Moines, IA, Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. provided its tempered, 504 Rough Cast textured channel glass, certified by the Safety Glazing Certification Council, as well as the proprietary frame system.

Bendheim Wall Systems Introduces New Exterior Channel Glass Frame System

Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. is introducing their new SF60S Single Glazed Store Front channel glass frame system.

Engineered by Bendheim and tested by independent laboratories, this exterior single-glazed frame system meets strict U.S. building requirements for performance walls and screen walls in vertical or horizontal configurations.

The system is designed for single-glazed walls with open or sealed joints and is fully tested for air and water infiltration, structural design load, and seismic displacement. Where thermal performance is not required, the SF60S with sealed joints acts as the building envelop for occupied areas. It can also be used as a rain screen with open or sealed joints and with or without a structural wall behind it. This frame system carries the same design elements as Bendheim’s well received double-glazed SF60 Store Front system, facilitating transitions from single- to double-glazed applications in the same plane without any change in frame appearance.
Bendheim Wall Systems has been designing proprietary frame systems since 2003. The SF60S Store Front system is the latest in the company’s line of seven fully-developed frame systems, offering the right solution for each project.

Bendheim Restoration Glass® (“New Antique” Window Glass) Featured in AIA Honor Award-Winning Project

The Beauvoir restoration project featuring authentic mouth-blown Restoration Glass®  (“new antique” window glass) receives a 2010 AIA National Honor Award.

Albert & Associates Architects specified Light Restoration Glass®, supplied exclusively by Bendheim, as the glass of choice for Beauvoir, the Presidential Library in Biloxi, Mississippi. The high-profile restoration project was recently recognized with a 2010 AIA National Honor Award.

 

Bendheim provided 209 panes of mouth-blown Restoration Glass® to restore Beauvoir’s antique glass windows and the front and back glass doors. The glass is identical to authentic mouth-blown antique window glass made before the advent of modern window glassmaking. The slight distortions, occasional bubbles, pits and imperfections characteristic to this specialty glass make it ideal for historically correct restorations of commercial buildings, residential work, and furniture. Restoration Glass® can be found in such high-profile projects as The White House in Washington, D.C., Monticello – Thomas Jefferson’s Home in Charlottesville, VA, and George Washington’s Home in Mount Vernon, VA.

 

Light Restoration Glass® is less distorting and similar to the glass from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Bendheim also offers Full Restoration Glass® that is more distorting and accurately represents much of the glass made in the 17th and 18th centuries. Both varieties are manufactured exclusively by Germany’s Glashütte Lamberts for Bendheim in North America, and can be laminated for additional safety.

 

Beauvoir, the presidential library and last home of Jefferson Davis, was built in 1852. Five of its seven buildings were destroyed and the remaining two were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Beauvoir lost its front and side porches and two sections of the roof.  According to the published AIA jury comments: “A wonderful, archetypal house with significant history has been brought back from the dead… This project transcends the typical restoration project – restoring Beauvoir was truly a labor of love and it shows in every detail of the home.” And, “As a victim of Hurricane Katrina, this project is significant culturally, historically and architecturally.”  (Source: https://www.aia.org/practicing/awards/AIAB082053)
