Lincoln Ctr. Theater, Featuring Bendheim Channel Glass, Named Architect Annual Design Review Winner

Lincoln Center’s new Claire Tow Theater, with its channel glass enclosed elevator, is a winner of Architect Magazine’s 2012 Annual Design Review. The competition celebrates the best of American architecture, selecting winners from projects completed during 2012.
H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture boldly developed the Clare Tow Theater, home to Lincoln Center Theater LCT3 on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont Theater. To create access to the theater, H3 Hardy punched through the roof of the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed structure to create two elevators wrapped in translucent Lamberts channel glass from Bendheim. The unique structural properties of the glass permit 23’ tall spans of glass, inviting volumes of daylight in while providing dramatic glowing images at night.
Close collaboration between H3 Hardy, Bendheim Wall Systems, and the glazier, A-Val Architectural Metal Co., brought the design of maximum glass with minimal frame elements to life. The SGCC-certified tempered and heat-soak tested glass channels have the characteristic strength to span openings 23’ tall and withstand high wind loads. Provided with a low-e coating, the channel glass bolsters the building’s thermal envelope and reduce energy costs.

In evaluating the award contenders, the Annual Design Review jurors recognized the projects striving for clarity of statement regarding their relationships to their surroundings. The LCT3 Theater is an excellent example of how iconic architecture can be changed without damaging its identity.

DIY Kitchen Cabinet Makeover: How to Install New Glass Inserts

Enhancing cabinets with decorative glass inserts will bring an entirely new look to kitchens without the expense of a large-scale renovation. With beautiful glass, homeowners can add depth, texture or color to the kitchen. Cabinet glass inserts come in a wide variety of styles, colors, patterns, and safety options. Best of all, they can be installed by the homeowner, without the help of a contractor.

“Replacing old or plain cabinet glass with new, fine decorative glasses can be a great way to enhance the entire kitchen,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “This design-savvy and budget-friendly project can be a relatively simple do-it-yourself endeavor.”

The process begins with correct measurements of the cabinet openings. According to Bendheim Cabinet Glass, for standard square and rectangular cabinet openings:

  • From the back side, carefully measure the maximum width and height of the opening where the glass insert will be placed.
  • Deduct 1/8″ from the maximum width and height measurements of the opening. For example, if the opening measures 14” x 24” – the glass insert would measure 13 7/8” x 23 7/8”.

When the cut-to-size glass inserts arrive, homeowners can select from several installation methods: retainer clips, glazing points and putty, or silicone caulking. These methods are detailed and illustrated in Bendheim’s “Do It Yourself Installation Tips.”

Installing cabinet glass inserts with retainer clips takes just a few simple steps:

  1. Remove your cabinet door and all hardware from the door.
  2. Lay the door, face down, on a flat, stable, non-abrasive surface.
  3. On the back of the door, pre-drill one or two evenly spaced holes on all four sides of the opening to receive the retainer clips. Select a drill bit that is a smaller diameter than the retainer clip screw.
  4. Clean both sides of your Bendheim decorative cabinet glass using a non-abrasive glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
  5. Insert and center the glass in the door opening. Note: The textured glass surface can face in or out according to your preference.
  6. Using a screwdriver, screw in the retainer clips in their pre-drilled holes.
  7. For large glass inserts, insert one or two additional retainer clips on each side of the opening.
  8. Your cabinet door is ready for re-installation.

Bendheim Decorative Glass’ Journey in Art & Architecture – Since 1927

Vivid colors mark 2012 in the world of architecture and interior design, as well as Bendheim’s 85th year in the industry. In the last year, demand has increased dramatically for materials making bold design statements, as well as for nature-inspired patterns and textures creating relaxing, spa-like spaces.
As a result, new designs are springing up, adding ever more variety to the architectural decorative glass palette, already brimming with aesthetic options. Glasses featuring colors, textures, patterns, as well as fabrics, wood or metal now adorn interior walls, doors, floors, furniture, and building façades.
“Decorative glass is now ubiquitous in architecture, but this has not always been the case,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “Today’s abundance is a result of creative collaborations formed by architects, designers and specialty glass companies in the pursuit of innovative solutions to design challenges.”
Architects and designers have always challenged the glass industry to push the physical limitations of glass and develop creative yet financially sound products. Less than a century ago, architects almost exclusively designed with flat, clear glass, as there were few suitable decorative options. Art, or stained, glasses brought color and art into buildings, first to houses of worship and luxury homes, and later to public spaces. Robert Sowers’ glass facade designed for the American Airlines terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport was one such example. Built in 1960, it was longer than a football field and more than 20-feet high.
The glass for the JFK project came from Bendheim, the importer of mouth-blown Lamberts glass from Germany. The company began offering decorative glasses for architectural applications in 1980, with the development and introduction of Restoration Glass®, a clear, slightly distorting mouth-blown glass for use in windows and doors of historic and reproduction buildings. It now graces many famous homes in the country, including The White House, Mount Vernon, and Monticello.
As architects became more interested in decorative glasses, the quest to convert these products into safety materials began. Liquid resin lamination and refined tempering programs allowed textured and colored art glasses to become compliant with building safety codes. Bendheim partnered with factories around the world and successfully transformed hundreds of its decorative glass varieties into building products.
“At an AIA Convention in the early 1990s, Bendheim’s small 10’x10’stand became one of the most visited spots thanks to the hundreds never-before-seen decorative architectural glasses we exhibited,” said Donald Jayson, Sr. Vice President of Bendheim.
In 1989, Bendheim established the first U.S. architectural glass showroom in New York City. This was followed by a number of other “firsts” for the company – it became the first to enter the U.S. market with an extensive collection of European textured glass, the first to offer maintenance-friendly, stain-resistant acid etched glass as a superior alternative to sandblasted glass, and the first to offer large-format post-consumer recycled glass for architectural applications.

Bendheim opens a new showroom in Passaic, N.J., showcasing a comprehensive selection of decorative architectural glasses from the company’s collection of more than 2,000 varieties. The venue is designed as an educational resource enabling architects and designers to increase their knowledge of decorative glass and explore custom design solutions.
Visitors to Bendheim’s Passaic, N.J., showroom will have access to the latest decorative laminated glasses, as well as etched, patterned, back-painted, mirrored, and fine mouth-blown art glasses. Bendheim’s extensive manufacturing capabilities – housed within the production hall next door – allow architects and designers to collaborate with the company experts, creating unique products to suit specific project requirements.
“The most innovative solutions, often resulting in award-winning applications, emerge when design professionals and glass experts work together to solve a challenge,” said Steven Jayson, Vice President of Bendheim. “The showroom is designed for these creative collaborations, with hundreds of inspiring glasses and our experts at hand.”

Bendheim Introduces “Jelly Bean” Architectural Glass Collection

Bendheim introduces its new “Jelly Bean” Collection of architectural glasses to the design/build market. Informed by the latest design trends, the safety-laminated “Jelly Bean” Glass Collection features 14 bright colors bringing a sense of optimism and comfort to hospitality, retail, healthcare, educational, and corporate interiors and exteriors.

“The ‘Jelly Bean’ Collection responds to current design trends favoring combinations of bright colors and daylight to create soothing, uplifting and stimulating environments,” said Donald Jayson, Sr. Vice President of Bendheim. “At the same time, the glass is highly functional and technologically advanced, offering years of UV protection and enhanced thermal control.”
The fire-polished “Jelly Bean” laminated glasses meet building safety codes, are stable, fade-resistant, and easy to maintain. The colored interlayers reduce solar energy transmittance, preventing heat build-up. They screen out up to 99% of damaging UV rays, helping minimize color fading of fabrics and furnishings. Installed in facades, the “Jelly Bean” Glass Collection helps control solar heat gain and reduces cooling loads.
Carefully selected from hundreds of hues, the collection offers a taste of Bendheim’s advanced custom color capabilities. All colors are VOC-free and have undergone vigorous testing to ensure long-term stability. Custom product options include a virtually unlimited number of transparent, translucent (opal), and opaque hues and surface alternatives, including etched, etched patterns, and surface textures.
