Project Description
A modern, abstract art glass window by Nancy Gong defines the street-facing façade of this luxury residence in Rochester’s charming High Falls historic district. According to the artist, the main goals of the “design, color selection, etchings and painted design elements” are to diffuse views from the outside and fill the space with joy, both on bright and sunny or overcast days.
During the day, the 10.5’-tall window provides a high level of privacy, while filtering lively, dappled daylight to the interior. At night, it becomes a luminous, façade-defining feature. The glass artwork was fabricated by Gong Glass Works, using a contemporary silicone-lamination technique and etched and painted Lamberts® mouth-blown glass. The colorful hand-made glass is laminated to clear tempered glass, then mounted on the interior face of insulated window units. It has been framed so that it can be easily moved, should the homeowners choose to relocate in the future.
The single-story, 2,000 sq. ft. structure features a 16’-tall ceiling and a storied history. Constructed in 1906, the building was originally a machine shop, then a commercial office space in the heart of Rochester’s old industrial center. It underwent several transformations, including a buildout that enclosed its shipping dock with a large glass window. This is where the new glass artwork is now located.
